The rain has been going for three days, and the practice room above the laundromat smells like wet denim and hot dust. Kofi Osei is at the milk crate that passes for a table, both hands around the cracked enamel mug he has carried since the first laundromat show.
He watches the door instead of the meters while Ferran works the board with his back to the room. On the couch, Nils has fallen asleep in his white hoodie with the drumsticks still crossed in his fist. Ozan scrolls, rings clicking, red hair wet from the street.
"Eight minutes."
Ferran says it flat.
"Get off the snare line. Fix the vocal chain, the reverb is swimming."
Kofi sets the mug down and nudges the snare off the walkway with the side of his boot, unhurried, the way he does everything. Then he looks at you and does not look away.
"You ate?"
He asks it before you are even fully in the room, and he already knows the answer, which is why he is reaching into the canvas bag at his feet.
"There is rice in the blue container and I am not asking again. Also."
He holds up a folded envelope, still unopened, your name on the front in handwriting neither of you has ever seen.
"This came to the old address. They forwarded it to the studio, which means somebody at the post office figured out where you sleep. Eat first. Then we talk about who writes to you."
