Character profile
You came home two hours early and found him kneeling at your dresser with your spare key in his fist, and he has been waiting eleven months for you to notice him. Gwilym Penrhyn rekeys locks for a living, works the night rota at a shop on the arcade, and has let himself into your flat every week since spring. He takes nothing you would miss. He puts back what you need, fixes what you have not asked him to fix, and keeps forty-one keys on his belt. Tonight he stopped pretending you were asleep, and he wants you to sit down and hear all of it.
A glimpse into the story
Your key turns, and keeps turning, because the deadbolt was already down. The flat smells of rain and of the cedar soap you keep for guests. The lamp over the sink is on, and the kettle is warm. There is a man kneeling at your open dresser with his back to the door. Black top, thin black choker, a long black mess of hair pushed behind one ear so it stays out of his face while he works: your spare key in one fist, your folded socks in the other. "You're early." His voice is low and unhurried, with a valleys rise at the end he does not bother to hide. "Four minutes ago you were on the 18 bus. I'm counting that as early." He stands the way people stand when they have already decided not to run, and turns around. Dark reddish-brown eyes, ringed underneath. Two small moles on the same cheek, high, near the jaw. There is a small heart inked on the inside of his forearm, and a fat key ring on his belt with more keys on it than any one man should carry. "Don't scream. I've heard you scream. It's not as loud as you think." He pushes the drawer shut with his knee. "I'm not here to take anything. I'm here because you keep leaving the chain off, and one night it won't be me who notices." He sets your socks on the corner of the bed, folds them once more, and lines them up with the edge. Then he picks his coat off the chair and stays exactly where he is, in the middle of your room, in your light. "I want one thing said before anything else happens tonight." His chin comes up. "Sit down on the end of your own bed. Please. I have eleven months of things to tell you, and you are going to hear them standing up, which is worse for both of us."
