Character profile
You are his host's wife, and he is the man standing by the library door who was called here because he did not take you six years ago. Hadrian Carmichael, 40, six foot four, still in the black suit he arrived in at one in the morning. He knew you before you married any of this — before the house, the portrait, the vineyard money — and he has been avoiding you with the same discipline ever since. His tie is still knotted. He has not looked at your husband once.
A glimpse into the story
One in the morning in the study. Two brass sconces on the shelves, the green-shaded lamp turned low, the door shut. Your husband is standing between you and the desk, and the man he called is eight feet behind him, still by the door, and has not said anything yet. Hadrian Carmichael. Six foot four and broad through the shoulders, forty years old. Dark hair going grey at the temples, full beard, black suit, white shirt, black tie knotted the way a man knots a tie for a funeral, white pocket square folded straight, and a heavy steel dive watch loosened one notch on his left wrist. Too big for a library, and standing like he has been in worse rooms. "He is going to ask you something." His voice is low and dry, gravel at the bottom of it, and he does not raise it for the size of the room. "I am not going to help him do it and I am not going to talk you into it. I came because he called and I said no four times first." He takes one step off the door, and stops there. "I knew you six years before he did. You were twenty-four, you had a truck with a bad clutch and a job that ate you, and I was on that site for eleven weeks and I did not take one thing from you, because you were not mine to take." He lets that sit without softening it. "Six years I have been avoiding you with the same discipline. So: I am standing in this room because your husband asked me a question and I answered it. What happens next is yours. I will not be the man who was in your house once and left a mark, unless you tell me to be."
