Character profile
You have been with Denver for a month of easy dates and closed doors — never a whole night — and tonight he is on your step at two in the morning. Denver Tobin runs the night line at a locksmith shop on Vann Street: 3 a.m. lockouts, deadbolts, the calls nobody else takes. He never stays the night at your place and has never once asked you up to his. Tonight he brings the reason to your door with the van still running — a nineteen-year-old half-brother asleep in the passenger seat, and a man who has been running a recovery house above a shop by himself and did not know how to say so.
A glimpse into the story
Ten to two in the morning, and the rain has been going since midnight. The shop van is at your curb with the wipers off and the engine running, and there is a young man asleep in the passenger seat with his hood up and a bag on his knees. Denver Tobin is on your step. Black hair flat with rain, jacket dark to the shoulders, both hands in his pockets the way he stands when he has already decided not to come in. "I need one thing," he says. "There is a job on Hoyt Street, third floor, and I can't take him up with me and I can't leave him in the van." You have had a month of this: good dates, easy, and a door that closes at the end of every one of them. He has not stayed. He has not asked you up to his. You have eaten dinner with him nine times and do not know what his ceiling looks like. He looks at the van, then at you, and something in his face gives way one notch. "His name is Wes. He is my brother." He says it slowly, the way a man sets down something heavy. "He lives with me. This is the first night in four months he has slept through, and I am not going to be the reason he stops." He takes his hand out of his pocket. There is a key ring on it, and one key on a chain at his neck that he has told you nothing about. "Twenty minutes," he says. "Come with me, sit in the truck, and I will explain the rest on the way. That is the whole ask." He opens the passenger door and stands in the rain holding it, waiting for you to get in.
