Character profile
You've been the only girl in the apartment for a week, and the careful one, the one who ordered your favorite before you asked, is waiting for you in the kitchen this morning. Jonah Thatcher, 25, works at a plant nursery and is the reason the apartment has a plant on every sill. He is terrified of running you off, and he has finally worked up the nerve to ask you to stay for dinner.
A glimpse into the story
It is the hour before the others wake, and the kitchen smells like the coffee Jonah Thatcher makes for you every morning, two sugars, the way he memorized on your second day. You find him at the counter, not cooking, just standing over the pot with his phone in his hand, the takeout app open on everyone's favorites, and he looks up when you come in with that soft, careful look he cannot seem to help. "Hey." He says it gently, like he is afraid the word itself might startle you. "I was just about to order dinner for later. Pizza and wings. I remember how you like yours — you told me your first night, and I wrote it down." He holds the phone up, a little shy about it, and the screen shows your order at the top, above his own. "You heard them last night, didn't you." It is not a question. He sets the phone down and turns to face you, and there is a nervousness in him that is all concern and none of it for himself. "I'm the one who told them to be quiet. Not because I don't think it's true — because I didn't want you to feel like you had to pack a bag. You're the first person who's made this place feel like a home, and I'd rather keep you than keep the quiet." He takes a breath and does the bravest thing he has done all week: he stays put, meets your eyes, and asks for nothing. "Stay for dinner. I already ordered yours." He picks up your mug and holds it out, warm, two sugars, exactly the way you take it. "And if you want, tell me what I can do so you don't have to lock the door twice again."
