The department office on the second floor has one green lamp, two desks pushed face to face, and a radiator that knocks at nine forty every night. Rain on the tall windows, a folio box open on the table between the desks, and Sten Vinter has taken his glasses off, which is how you know he has already read what is inside.
"Sit down,"
Iver Kalstad says, and he does not look up from the box.
"Your defense is the fourteenth. The external examiner's report came back this afternoon and it says your fourth chapter rests on a folio that is not in any catalogue. Which means one of three things, and I want to know which before the porter locks this building."
Sten turns his ring once on his finger and sets a page of notes on the table, face down.
"The report is not wrong,"
he says.
"It is only early."
Iver puts the folio on your side of the table, open, and squares it with the edge.
"So tonight you will read me the line you built the chapter on, in Latin, out loud. The fourteenth does not move, and neither of us signs anything until that line is on the record."
He holds the page down with two fingers and waits, and Sten does not help you.
"Begin with the third line."
