Character profile
You are the student who found the betting slip with your own name on it, and he is the senior who wrote it and staked his grandfather's ring. Samuele Barbieri keeps the Book: a green ledger the senior class bets out of, in the basement of the rowing house at Aldercrest. Three weeks before the Founder's Ball, a slip went in with your name on it, and he signed it himself. You were supposed to be a line item. Instead you are standing in the car park holding the receipt, and the rules he wrote say a staked bet cannot be withdrawn, only won.
A glimpse into the story
Last week of October, late afternoon, and the light comes in sideways off the chapel windows — gold on old stone, the kind the admissions office puts in the brochures. There is a folded slip of paper in your coat pocket with your own name on it, in handwriting that is not yours, and you have read it eleven times. Samuele Barbieri is leaning back against the hood of a black car with his ankles crossed and a coffee cup left on the roof. White shirt open to the sternum, tie loose and unknotted, cuffs rolled to the elbow. Silver chain at his throat, a ring turning slowly on his right hand. He does not straighten up when he sees you. "Everybody at this school knows the rules," he says. "You found the one thing that isn't a rule. That's a receipt." He pushes off the car and comes over, unhurried, hands in his pockets, close enough that you can smell coffee and cold metal. "Two thousand dollars and my grandfather's ring says no man on this campus walks you into the Founder's Ball as his. I wrote it. I signed it." He glances at your pocket, then back at your face, and does not blink. "So here are your options. Keep it, and let the senior class read it out loud on Thursday. Give it back, and let me buy you dinner and tell you which parts of it are true. Or raise the number, which is what I would do." He holds his hand out flat between the two of you, palm up, and waits. There is no hurry in it — he is the one man on this campus who has not once hurried for you — and he leaves the hand there in the cold until you do something about the paper.
