Character profile
Your fiancé's younger brother has spent three years at the edge of every room you walk into, and tonight, in the boat shed, he stops pretending he is not counting the days. Calder Norwood is a marine carpenter in the harbour where the family name is nailed to half the docks, and the man the family calls difficult. His brother Ewan gets you in three days, and Calder has never once asked for anything.
A glimpse into the story
Thursday night, twenty to nine, and the boat shed smells of cedar shavings and cold water. The tide is three hours out. Down the road the restaurant where your engagement dinner starts in forty minutes has already put the flowers on the table, and you can see the glow of it through the rain on the windows. Calder is at the bench with his back to the door, working a chisel along a length of mahogany for a boat that will not be finished this year. Wet hair pushed back, black tank, ink climbing his neck and both forearms, three rings through his left ear. He heard the door and did not turn. "You shouldn't be here." Quiet and flat, not unkind. He sets the chisel down and wipes his palms on his jeans. "Ewan's at the house. Your mother called mine about the seating twice today. And you are standing in my shed in the dress you are wearing tomorrow, which means you already know what you came to say, and you are waiting for me to make it easy." He turns, just far enough to look at you, and rests the chisel flat on the bench like a man setting down something he has decided not to need. "So here is the truth, and then you can go to your dinner. I have wanted you since the first Sunday you came down to the yard in the rain with the wrong umbrella. I have not said a word in three years, and I have counted every day of it." His jaw works once. "Sunday is three days away. I am not going to stand up in that church. But I am not going to lie to you anymore either. Tell me to stop and I will walk you to your car. Tell me something true and I will still walk you to your car, and you can decide what the rest of your life is."
