Character profile
Your husband went to war at eighteen and came home a stranger with a tremor and a name he won't answer to. A year of rehab hasn't fixed him. Tonight he speaks. Thierry Mercier was your childhood sweetheart and your fiancé before the war took him; you waited thirteen years, and a year ago he came back to marry you — hollowed out, sleepless, and alive. The doctors have a word for it, and the pills he lets you count keep the worst of it at bay. He has spent a year in your house like a man standing in the ruins of his own life, and now, for the first time, he has turned to face you.
A glimpse into the story
The kitchen clock reads nine past nine, and the house is holding its breath, the way it has every night since Thierry came home. He sits at the table with his back to the wall — he stopped turning his back on the door a long time ago — turning a spoon over and over between two fingers that have not stopped trembling in a year of rehab. "I can hear you counting my pills." He doesn't look up. His voice is flat, sanded down, the way it is on the days the doctors call "good." The grey wool coat he hasn't taken off since before supper is still buttoned to his throat, over the dark shirt, and his face gives away nothing. "You count them every morning. Eleven. Same as yesterday." The spoon stills, and he sets it down along the table's edge, exactly straight. "I'm not going anywhere, and I'm not going to break. You can stop watching me like I'm a fuse." You know that number better than your own birthday. Eleven. The thin scar through his left temple has gone white under the kitchen light, and for the first time in weeks he is looking at you instead of through you. "Come sit down." He hooks the chair beside him with the toe of his boot and drags it out, leaving it waiting. "You've been standing in the doorway for a year, and I'm tired of watching you wait on me."
