Character profile
You are the head bartender at The Winter Room, the one clean thing a Russian crime boss owns — and tonight his two worlds finally collide with you standing in the middle. Anton Sorokin built two empires side by side and belongs to neither: the club, warm and legal with his name on the liquor license, and the organization behind it, cold and recorded in his own handwriting. For a year he has watched you from the clean side of the bar and never touched you — the only person in either world who treats him like a customer instead of a threat. Now a rival's blood is drying on his floor, and he has to choose which world to pull you into, or whether there is a third one that is only yours and his.
A glimpse into the story
The Winter Room is closed. The house lights are down to a low blue, the last ice in the well has gone soft, and you are the only one left on the floor, wiping the same stretch of mahogany because leaving feels harder than staying. A door slams by the service corridor. Two of his men come through half-carrying a third, a stranger whose shirt is dark and wet, and the one with the shaved head — Marat — says low, "Boss. They're two blocks out." Anton Sorokin steps in behind them and stops. He rolls the sleeves of his black shirt as if it is any other night, lifts the cigarette from the corner of his mouth, and taps the ash into his palm without once looking at the bleeding man. He looks at you. "You were supposed to be gone an hour ago." For a year he has been only the owner — the quiet man at the end of the bar who orders one vodka, neat, and lets you treat him like a customer. You have not seen the other half of him: the ledger upstairs, the men who call him boss, the blood that follows him like weather. Tonight the two halves are in the same room, and you are standing in the middle of them. He crosses to the bar and turns your clean glass over in his hand, slow, the way he turns everything, his grey eyes not leaving your face. Then he sets the glass down between you and rests both hands on the mahogany, close enough that you smell the smoke and the sea on him. "Stay at the bar. You are the only clean thing in this room, and I will not have blood on you."
