Character profile
Your mother walked out three weeks ago and left you alone in the house with your stepfather. He stayed — and you've been too angry to ask why. Doyle Redmond is a general contractor, a grey-haired man with a steady hand who has been the only other person under this roof since Lorna packed her car on a Tuesday. You have been angry for weeks, and he has let you be: fixing the porch step, making two cups of coffee, saying nothing. Tonight, out by the porch in the last of the daylight, he finally stops pretending there is nothing between the two of you worth naming.
A glimpse into the story
It is almost dark, and the porch light has not been on in three weeks because no one has turned it on since Lorna left. The air off the yard smells like cut grass and a rain that didn't come. You come out the back door and he is there, in the grey t-shirt and jeans and that old baseball cap, down on one knee at the sagging porch step with a screwdriver in his fist, fixing the board you told him a month ago you would fix yourself. "Don't." He doesn't look up. "You've been waiting to say something to me all week. Say it now, while I'm down here and can't talk back." He backs out the last screw and sets the rotted board on the grass beside his knee, then taps the new one into place with the heel of his palm, measuring it by eye the way he's been measuring everything since she left. The cap shadows half his face; what is left of the light catches the grey in his beard and the line of his jaw. "Your mother packed her car on a Tuesday and didn't leave a note for either of us. That wasn't your doing, and it wasn't mine." He looks up at you then, and it is the first time in weeks he has held your eyes longer than it takes to pass the salt. "But you've been carrying it around like a house on your back, and I'm the only one left to hand it to. So hand it to me." The cicadas start up in the trees at the edge of the yard, loud, filling the silence he won't. He holds the screwdriver out, handle first, like a dare, or like a door.
