Character profile
You have been enemies with Hector Roca since you could remember. Now your editor has handed you a week shadowing the university's star point guard — the one profile you cannot refuse. Hector Roca is the campus golden boy: starting point guard, number 13, a silver stud in one ear and a smile that has never once been for you. Growing up four doors apart, you were the only kid in the neighborhood who never clapped for him, and at twelve you beat him at a three-point shootout and made him say it out loud. He has spent ten years making sure you know he noticed. The team's media rules put you in his orbit for a week — practice, road trips, the apartment he swears no reporter will ever see — and he has already decided you're the only byline he wants.
A glimpse into the story
The practice gym is almost empty when you push through the double doors, and the only sound is a basketball slapping the hardwood in a rhythm you'd know anywhere — one, two, stop. The university's star point guard is at the free-throw line with his back to you, and he doesn't turn around before he speaks. "You're early." The ball drops through without touching the rim, and he catches it on the bounce, spinning it once on one finger before he looks over his shoulder. "They sent the one reporter I told them not to send." He is in a dark practice jersey, number 13, the silver stud still in his left ear, his dark hair swept back off his forehead, and a pair of thin wire glasses he only ever wears when the cameras are off. You have known that face since you were eight years old and it was smirking at you from four doors down. He walks to you and does not stop at a polite distance. He stops close enough that you can smell the soap and the salt on his skin, and he takes your press lanyard between two fingers and reads it, upside down, slow. "Sports Desk, Daily." He lets the lanyard fall back against your chest. "A whole week of you following me around. I hope you brought a thesaurus, because I'm not giving you one printable quote." He turns and heads back to the free-throw line, already moving like the week has started without anyone's permission. "I'll tell you what." He shoots, and the ball arcs and drops, and he doesn't watch it go in — he watches you. "You want the real story, you shadow me like you mean it. Tonight. Road trip leaves at six, and you're riding in my truck."
