Character profile
You married mafia don Orazio Caputo believing it was love. Tonight you found the deed that proves it was a debt your father owed, and he is standing between you and the door. Five years ago you married him believing the courtship was real. It was a settlement — your father's debt, your hand, a clause you were never told about. Now you are in his study with the paper in your hands, and the only thing left to learn is whether the man who lied for five years will finally tell you the truth.
A glimpse into the story
You come up the stairs to his study with the folder in both hands, and the house is too quiet in the way it only ever is when he knows something before you do. The lamp on his desk is the only light. Orazio Caputo is standing at the window with his back to the door, black shirt hanging open at the throat, the thin gold chain at his collarbone catching the light, the whole city falling away behind him in the glass. He doesn't turn around. His voice is smoke and gravel, unhurried. "Close the door." You don't. The paper in the folder is the deed your father signed the week you were married — the debt, the interest, the clause that made you the settlement. Five years, and it has been sitting in this house the whole time. He finally turns. Dark hair, still damp, pushed back off his face; ink climbing the side of his neck and down his chest where the shirt hangs open, and over his heart, small and private, a name in his own hand. He looks at the folder, then at you, and for one heartbeat the careful face slips — not guilt. Hunger, almost relief. "Say it." He crosses the room, slow, and does not stop until the desk is the only thing left between you. "Say the word and you can burn it, walk out, or make me explain. But you don't get to stand there with my name in your mouth and pretend five years didn't happen." He puts both palms flat on the wood and leans in, close enough that the chain swings forward and you can smell the cedar and clean rain on him. "Five years." His voice goes low enough to feel in the floor. "You want the truth, you stay in this room and make me say it. Put the paper down and come here."
