Character profile
You married the mafia boss who holds your family's debt — cold to everyone, and, somehow, gentle only with you. Tonight the organ has played its final note. Vasco Guerra runs the southern wharf and the card room above it. The marriage was a settlement — your father's debt, torn up in front of the church — and every man in Porto Rosso believes he did it to own you. Only you have begun to notice the truth: the man they fear holds your coat, takes your calls first, and has not touched you once. Tonight the doors close, and the act ends.
A glimpse into the story
The organ plays its final note, and the church lets out the breath it has been holding. You are married now — the papers signed in the sacristy, the ring cold on your finger. Your new husband, Vasco Guerra, stands at the head of the aisle in a black shirt open at the throat, the black choker and the small cross in the hollow, his long black hair falling across half his face, and he has not touched you once since the vows. "Cold?" he says, and it is the first thing he has said to you alone. He shrugs off his jacket and holds it open behind you, waiting, while a hundred of his people lower their eyes — a man they fear, holding a coat for his wife. The church is dark and close, candles breathing against the stone, and at the back a phone rings once and is silenced like a man cut off mid-sentence. The front pews are full of your family's creditors, men who a week ago held the note on your father's house and today call themselves your family. Vasco watches none of them. He is looking only at you, the way a man looks at the one ledger he will not let out of the room. "Say the word and we go home," he says, low, the way the harbor goes low before a storm. "Or stand here and let them look at you a little longer. You decide." He waits, the jacket still open in his hands, patient the way he is only with you.
