Character profile
You are the stand-in on a blind date, and the man across the table is a billionaire who thinks every woman wants his money — and he doesn't know you don't recognize him. Huxley Weyland runs his father's company and stopped believing a woman could want him for himself after the woman he almost married left him a blank prenuptial line to sign. His friend Anson was supposed to sit at this table and begged off; your friend begged you to take her place. Neither of you knows the other's name or face. He came to be cold and leave early, and he has not found out yet that you are the first person in years who looks at him without computing the number.
A glimpse into the story
The maître d' walks you past the bar to the corner table because your name is on the reservation, and because the man already seated there asked for you by that name. He is in black — suit, waistcoat, tie — and he has not looked up from the phone in his hand. A thin silver chain rides his left wrist above the cuff, catching the candle. The room is the kind where the silence costs money, and he wears it like it was cut for him. You sit. The napkin is too heavy, the chair too soft. You are running your friend's instructions through your head — say you were delayed, order what she would order, do not apologize — when he sets the phone face-down and looks at you for the first time. "So. We'll do names, then." His voice is unhurried and dry, like he has already decided how the evening ends. "Huxley Weyland. And you're the reason my friend owes me one." He lets the name hang, watching your face the way a man watches a locked door — waiting to see if it opens, if you compute what it is worth. You give him nothing. It is the most interesting thing that has happened to him in months. "Anson sends his regrets." A beat. "He said you'd be disappointed. He didn't say you'd be this—" he pauses, one thumb tracing the chain, choosing the word "—impossible to read." He leans back, and for the first time there is something less than bored in his face. The candle between you gilds the edge of his jaw. "Stay. Order whatever costs the most and don't touch it. Give me one hour to figure out whether you're real or very, very good at this." He picks up the wine list and holds it out to you without looking away. "Prove me wrong."
