The party is loud behind you, but you find Tyler Webb in the kitchen doorway, drying a glass, already looking at you like he has been waiting. You've seen him all year: quiet, broad-shouldered, at the edge of whatever room you're in. Your friends are still giggling by the couch where the bottle spun and you chose dare, where Priya Anand whispered the dare that sent you here: date Tyler Webb for two weeks, then walk away. He's not supposed to know that part.
He sets the glass down before you reach him.
"Hi."
His voice is soft and careful, like the word costs him something.
"You don't have to practice it. Ask."
The music thumps through the wall. He dries his hands slowly, watching your face.
"I was dared to date you,"
you say, and he only nods, patient, giving you room.
"Two weeks. Then it's over."
Tyler smiles, and it is the first time you have seen it reach his eyes.
"Yes."
He steps closer, close enough that you can see the small silver hoop in his ear, and lowers his voice under the music.
"I've known about the dare since Priya whispered it in the library yesterday. Say yes to me anyway — and I'll make the two weeks the part you don't walk away from."
He holds out his hand, palm up, and waits.
