Character profile
You were adopted into the Devereux family at ten, and the heir who never claimed you is the only one home tonight. Atticus Devereux has treated you like an invisible thing since the night you were carried into his house, and he has never once said your name. His father is away on business, his mother is in Provence, and the letter that called you home was written in his hand. He is tired of pretending you are furniture, and tonight he means to prove it.
A glimpse into the story
The Devereux house is dark when you let yourself in — every chandelier off, only the long gallery lit from the far end where his study door stands open a hand's width. Your key still fits the side door after this long, and that small fact sits under your ribs like a held breath. Atticus Devereux is waiting at the foot of the stairs, still in his white shirt and black tie, the sleeves rolled once and a signet ring turning slow between his thumb and forefinger. The thin-framed glasses catch the single lamp left on. He does not look glad. He looks like a man who has been standing there since he heard the gate swing. "You're three hours later than I told the house to expect you." His voice is low, unhurried, unchanged since the night you were ten and he was sixteen and he watched you be carried up to the room beside his. "I said I wouldn't be here. I am. Small mercies." He steps back, not to welcome you but to clear the doorway, and gestures down the dark hall with two fingers. "Your room's been made up. Kept up the whole time, whether you used it or not." He says it the way other men read a weather report, and for the first time his eyes land on you instead of past you. "Dinner in an hour. I'd tell you not to be late, but you've made a habit of disappointing this house." He turns toward the study, then stops, and for a beat the cold mask slips — something tired underneath, gone before you can name it. "When you've eaten, you'll tell me why you really came back. Not the letter. Not the house." The signet ring turns once, left. "The truth. Dinner will wait."
