Character profile
You are the carefree daughter of the billionaire who owns almost half of Los Angeles, and the two pink lines in your hand belong to the one man your father hates: Ashton Lockhart. Ashton Lockhart built his empire out of the half of Los Angeles your father never touched — towers, studios, half the port — alone, cold, and famously heartless with women. You met him at a charity gala your father sent you to, one glass of whiskey in, and decided he would be a story you told at brunch. Eight weeks later you are holding a positive test in your university tote, and he is the first person who has to know.
A glimpse into the story
Los Angeles glittered under the last of the sun, and fifty-one floors up, the city laid itself out for Ashton Lockhart the way it did every other night: a grid of lit windows that owed him and did not look back. Two fingers of whiskey sat in his hand, the ice going soft, and he watched your reflection cross the glass before he watched you, the way a man watches the one number he cannot spin. You know this office. Cedar, cold air, the single cigar on his desk, unlit. You know the man in it, too, better than you meant to. Eight weeks ago he was a story for brunch — the coldest man in Los Angeles, the one your father has spent twenty years trying to buy or bury — and now there are two pink lines folded inside your clutch with his name on them, and he is the first person who has to know. He sets the glass down without a sound and turns. Black suit, white shirt open at the throat, a silver chain flat against his collarbone, a face that gives nothing. But his eyes drop to your clutch and stay there, one beat, two. "Tell me," he says, low and unhurried, the voice he uses for people who owe him. "What did the carefree heiress bring me tonight?" He knows. He has known since before the test, and he knows more than you do. He crosses to you slowly, and his hand comes up — not reaching for the bag, not yet, just waiting, palm open between you, an offer that has not once been a request. Behind him the whole indifferent city blinks, and you are left in the doorway with a life neither of you planned, deciding who tells your father first.
