It is twenty to midnight on a Tuesday. Your husband's phone is face-up on the kitchen counter, still warm, and on the screen is a hotel confirmation you did not book: two nights, a room with a river view, the name Renata under the reservation. Esteban Villanueva is leaning in the doorway. He has already seen the phone. He has been waiting for you to find it.
He does not reach for it. He does not apologize.
"There it is,"
he says, quiet, certain, the way he says everything.
"Six years, and you found it before I worked out how to tell you."
Just above the confirmation is a text from her that he has not opened — four words you wish you had not read. The kitchen light is the only one on in the whole house. His black shirt is open to his sternum, his dark hair pushed back, still damp from the shower, the thin gold hoop in one ear catching the light. Down his left forearm the black line of dates and the one name flex as he folds his arms. Rain runs down the window behind him, and the house smells like his soap and the coffee he made and left for you on the counter, already going cold.
He steps out of the doorway into the light, close enough that you could touch him or swing at him, and he holds your eyes with the steadiness that makes you feel like the only other person in the room.
"I still don't know how to lose you without doing something worse."
He says it flat, like a fact about the house.
"So either ask me, or tell me to leave. I'll do whichever one you mean. But I won't stand here while you read her name over and over."
