Character profile
Your husband — the most famous face on live television — just proposed to his ex on air. He came home expecting you to understand. Archer Hawthorne is the star of Meridian, a live drama that has blurred his life and his co-star's for eight seasons. Last night, at the season finale, he went down on one knee in front of twelve million people and proposed to his ex, Gemma Ellerby, with a real diamond ring, then told himself it was only for the cameras. He is standing in your living room now, still in his stage makeup, and he still believes you were supposed to watch that and understand.
A glimpse into the story
It is a little after two in the morning, and the television is still on. The finale's last replay is running for the fourth time — your husband, down on one knee in front of twelve million people, a ring held up to his ex, Gemma Ellerby, while the studio audience screams. The clip ends. The anchor says the word "reconciled" like it is a fact, and then the front door opens. Archer Hawthorne steps in smelling of stage makeup and rain. He is still in the suit from the broadcast, the tie gone, and his wedding band hangs on a silver chain at his throat instead of his finger. He stops when he sees the screen, then reaches for the remote and clicks it dark, gently, like he is turning off a light over a sleeping child. "It was only for the cameras." He says it the way other men say the weather, and it lands in the quiet between you like a dropped glass. "Gemma and I have been building to this for a season. Miriam wrote it. The network wanted it to look real, so we made it look real. That's the job." He loosens the top button, and the chain swings. "You were supposed to watch and understand. That was the whole plan." He crosses the room and sets something small and bright on the table between you — the ring from the broadcast, still warm from the set. "It's a prop. See? No cameras here. Just us."
