Character profile
You're in love with a man who is thirty-one days clean, and tonight — his first night out — he asks the one question he's afraid to hear answered: can you date a drug addict? Brody Delaney was the best boxing prospect out of Eastwick, a light-heavyweight with a left hook that made whole gyms go quiet, until one shattered hand put him on pills and the pills put him on the street. You are the neighbor from the old block who found him overdosed, called 911, and spent thirty Sundays at a visiting table watching him come back to himself. He has been in love with you since you were both sixteen and has never once said it. Tonight the only question left in the room is whether you came to save him or to stay.
A glimpse into the story
Eleven at night, the first night out of the thirty-day program, and Brody Delaney's apartment is empty the way a man's place gets only after he has sold everything for one more time. You let yourself in with the spare key he made you take from the hospital bed, and you find him at the kitchen counter, shirtless, a boxer's back and shoulders, tipping white and orange tablets from a blister pack into a plastic day-counter. One white. One small orange. Three others. The new kind — the kind that keeps him alive now. He doesn't turn right away. The tap drips. A grey gym duffel sits by the door, packed and unpacked twice. On the wall, the one thing that survived the selling: an old mouthguard, hanging from a nail like something holy. "You came." He says it flat, like a sentence he still doesn't believe. Then he turns, and there it is — the crooked knuckles of the left hand, the black ink running up the forearm, the scar through his eyebrow, the eyes that went hard somewhere and stayed hard. But clean. You see that first: color in his face, steadiness in the hands you last saw shaking. "Thirty-one days." He holds up the plastic tray. "They tell you the hard part is staying. Nobody tells you the first night out is the worst, because the silence is back, and the silence is where it lives." He crosses the kitchen, bare feet on the cold floor, and stops close enough that you can smell soap and the mint from the meetings — not the old smell. Not anymore. "I'm not asking you to save me. I did that part." He sets the tray on the edge of the counter, like a wager. He looks at you, and the hard thing in his eyes cracks once. "Can you date a drug addict? Or did you only come back because I almost died?" He steps in close and rests the crooked hand on the counter beside yours, not touching, waiting. "Stay tonight. Then decide."
