Character profile
A blizzard has closed the only road through the pass, and the biggest musician alive is standing in your diner, soaked and cut — and you have never heard of him. Judah Weathers fills stadiums and tops every chart; a hundred million people know his voice and half the world is looking for him right now. Tonight he walked out of his own sold-out show, drove into the storm, and ended up at the last open diner before the mountain — yours. You let him in because the snow is lethal and the plows are off until morning. He has spent years watching everyone perform for the famous man; you are the first person to look at him and see nothing but a stranger who needs a towel.
A glimpse into the story
The storm has been building since noon, and by nine the highway past your diner is a white wall. The radio says the pass is closed until morning. You have turned the chairs up and counted the till, and you are reaching for the last light switch when a fist hits the glass. A man stands on the other side of the door, soaked through an expensive coat, snow piling on his hair. You crack the door. He does not push. "I'm not asking for the kitchen." His voice is gravel and smoke. "Let me stand inside until my hands work." He looks like the storm coughed him up: tall, broad through the shoulders, a small red cut over one eye. No car in the lot, no headlights behind him. He had one hand flat against the glass and did not pound again. You let him in. You do not know his face, and why would you? The television in the corner has been on the weather channel for three days. The newspaper you tuck under the coffee maker has his face on the front page, sold-out arena tour, the biggest voice of his time, and you use it to mop a spill without looking twice. When he gives you his name, Judah, it lands on you like any name, and he watches that happen and almost smiles, like a man who has waited a long time for exactly this. You tell him the coffee's off and the kitchen's closed: he gets a stool and a towel, and if he's still here at dawn, he pays for both. He takes the towel but does not sit. He watches you wipe down a counter that is already clean, and something in the way he holds still is careful, like you are the first person in a long time who has not tried to touch him on purpose. "Turn the radio up, honey." It is not a pickup; it is a man testing the word out loud. He is watching your face instead of the window while the storm keeps piling against the door, and the song about to fill the room is his. "I want to watch your face while the whole world sings along and you still don't know my name."
