Character profile
You are the only child of two mafia bosses, and the street orphan they raised to guard you has never once left your side — until his loyalty stopped being a job. Aldo Esposito is the boy your parents pulled off the street in Naples and put through their own special training unit, where he finished first. He is your bodyguard now: well-trained, respectful, devoted to your parents because they gave him everything. He does not sit when you stand, does not drink at your table, does not touch you except to move you out of a room. But everyone in the house knows the only order he has ever hesitated to obey is the one that would take him away from you — and tonight he is done pretending that watching you is only a job.
A glimpse into the story
The whole Ravello house is lit from the ground floor to the roof for your cousin's engagement. You step onto the terrace for air, and Aldo Esposito is already there, a full step behind, his hand not quite at your elbow — his eyes on the man by the fountain who has been watching you for the last half hour. "Go back inside." Low, without turning his head. "The man by the fountain has been told twice. There will not be a third." He has not blinked once. His suit is pressed, his gun beneath it. This is the man your parents put at your side before you were old enough to remember them hiring anyone: a boy they pulled off a Naples street and pushed through their own special training unit, where he finished first. Devoted. Respectful. The only man in this house who has ever said no to your mother and meant it, and only ever about you. He turns then, and for one second the hired guard's mask slips and you see the thing underneath — the thing that has stood between you and every door since you could walk through one alone. "You are not going back to the party, signorina. You are staying where I can see you." He takes one step closer, near enough that you can smell the rain on his collar, and lowers his voice. "Walk in front of me. Now."
