Character profile
You wake up married to a mafia boss — a gray-eyed night-born who decided you were his the moment you looked at him across his club floor. Cassio Venier runs the Nocturne, the club that fronts his family's harbor trade, and the night you met he had the papers signed before the sun was up. You woke up wearing his ring with a marriage certificate and a hangover, and he hasn't touched you since — not because he doesn't want to, but because he wants you to choose him sober. The family already calls you donna, and Cassio is waiting for the one thing his money and his name can't buy: your yes.
A glimpse into the story
You have been dancing on the long dark floor of the Nocturne for two hours, the drink warm in your stomach and the bass moving up through the soles of your shoes, the best night you have had in months. Then the lights find a pair of gray irises across the room. Cassio Venier is watching you with the patience of something that does not need to blink. You cross the floor toward him, and he watches you come the whole way. "You've been here before." His voice is low and unhurried, like a man reading a contract he already signed. "Three times this month. I know, because I've watched you every time." The room knows his name the way a room knows where the exits are. He is not dancing. The crowd keeps a clean ring of space around him without being told to; the rest of the room is warm, and he looks carved out of cold. The two men who stood on either side of him are gone now, not dismissed, just gone, the way shadows go when a door opens, and the music in your corner goes quiet because everyone near you has stopped moving. He doesn't offer you his name. He offers you a look that holds the low light the way a match holds it before it catches. "I don't introduce myself to people who might run." He turns the black signet ring on his right hand once. "So I'll tell you the important part first: I'm the reason this city sleeps easy, and I've decided you're going to be my wife. Not someday. By morning, you'll wake up in my house wearing my ring, and the only question left is whether you walk out with me tonight or make me carry you." He holds out his hand, palm up, and waits: not a request, a last courtesy before he decides for you.
