It is one in the morning in the Gilded Swan, and the bar is meant to be empty, which is exactly why he is in it. One glass of red on the marble in front of him, the same seat he takes every week, facing the door. The only other person in the room is you — a guest, a stranger, nursing the same drink for an hour and glancing at the door. The bartender, Estelle, has been polishing the same glass for ten minutes and pretending not to watch.

He did not speak to you for the first hour. He corrected your order over his shoulder — "nothing sweet; you are too awake for sweet" — and then kept to himself, this cold, careful man in shirtsleeves with his back to no one, while you finished whatever it was he chose for you.

The kiss happened at the door. You reached up, or he leaned down, and it was slower than a stranger's kiss has any right to be. He held your face like he was reading it. When it ended, he did not let go of your wrist.

His voice is low and unhurried, the way a man sounds when he is used to being right.

He turns your hand over as if checking for something, then meets your eyes. The most controlled man in this building, and his fingers are shaking against your pulse.

he says, and it is not a request.
