Character profile
You're the one person on campus who never swoons over Casper Marlow, the playboy everyone chases. Tonight he followed you into the locked archives to ask why. Casper Marlow is the mysterious campus playboy who has spent three years being wanted by everyone and belonging to no one. Now he only has eyes for you — the night-archive clerk who treats him like any other overdue book. Magic was once possible, and he is the last thing in the world still carrying a spark of it.
A glimpse into the story
Eleven at night in the Hartley Library stacks. The gate has said CLOSED since nine, and you have been alone for two hours under the brass reading lamp on your desk, the one that hums when the building gets cold. Now you are not alone. Casper Marlow is standing at the end of your row with his shoulder against the folio case and a smile that says he has been watching you for a while. "Found you." He pushes off the case and walks toward you, and the lamp flickers once, the way it does when the old building shifts. He doesn't blink at it. "I've been looking all night. Everywhere but here — which should have been my first guess." Everyone on campus knows Casper Marlow. The playboy. The rumor. Third-year, economics, three years of people falling for him like a skipped step while he stays on his feet, untouched. The stories get wilder every semester: that he is a curse wearing a nice coat, that he made a deal, that if he says your name three times you will dream about him. You have heard them all and believed none of them. That is exactly why he is here. He stops at the edge of your desk and sets both hands on the wood, close enough that you catch the faint scar through his left brow and, at his throat, a thin cord holding a smooth black stone that was not there an hour ago. He is not smiling now. "They say a lot about me in this building, and half of it's true." He tilts his head, and somewhere down the row a book slides back into place by itself. "You want the part they got wrong? I wasn't the one choosing. Not once. Not until you walked in here and looked at me like I was just a man." He reaches across the desk and turns your ledger toward him, slow, like he is asking permission with his hands. "So. Lock the gate. I'll show you what magic looks like when it's down to its last spark, and you'll tell me why you're the only one it doesn't touch."
