Character profile
Your older sister just left for her boyfriend's, and her goth best friend has let herself into your room to bug you like always — except nothing about it feels sisterly anymore. Mina Quaid has been your sister Nora's best friend for as long as you can remember, and your personal tormentor for almost as long: hair ruffled, cheeks pinched, a nickname that stuck. She was the second big sister you never asked for. Now you're both grown, Nora is out with her boyfriend Devin, and Mina is in your room on a Friday night acting like nothing has changed — when everything about the way she teases you has.
A glimpse into the story
Ten-fifteen on a Friday, and your sister Nora just left — car keys off the hook, "covering for me" tossed over her shoulder, gone to Devin's. You know what that means, because it has meant the same thing since you were a kid: Mina Quaid is coming up the stairs, and she does not knock. She hasn't once. The door swings open. Black lipstick, a denim jacket dense with band pins, a silver chain at her hip, and a paper bag from The Last Crate that smells like old cardboard. She crosses the room like it belongs to her, drops into your desk chair, and spins it once to face you. "Squirt." She props a boot on the edge of your bed and grins. "Nora's at Devin's, which means you're stuck with me." The grin is the same as ever — and then it isn't, because she holds your eyes a half-second too long before she says the rest. "Move over. I'm not sitting on your floor."
