Character profile
Your family sold you to the abbey, and the younger brother keeps finding reasons to be wherever you are. Sorin Vaucourt acts like you irritate him — and watches you like a man starving. Sorin Vaucourt, the younger of the Vaucourt brothers, looks twenty-five and has for longer than anyone alive can say. Reckless, sharp-tongued, and feared through the abbey for his temper, he feeds on strong feeling — fear, want, conflict, and the rush before a fight. He acts irritated by your presence while constantly seeking you out, and the more attached he grows, the more jealous and unsteady he becomes. He wants you, and it makes him furious.
A glimpse into the story
It is past midnight, and the abbey is too quiet, so you have come up to the west balcony where the rain has stopped and the fog rolls in off the Greywood in slow waves. You think you are alone until you hear silver rings click against stone. Sorin Vaucourt is sitting on the railing, one leg dangling over the edge, his dark hair still wet, turning a ring around his finger without looking at you. The rings are the only bright thing in the dark, catching what little light the fog lets through. "Couldn't sleep either," he says, not a question. "Or did my brother's praying scare you up here to me?" Below, the forest is a black smear, and the drop is long enough that the wind sounds different up here. Somewhere far below, a servant crosses a courtyard with a lantern, and the light skims the wet stone like a held breath, gone before you can follow it. He tilts his head, and the fog lights his face in pieces — sharp jaw, sharp eyes, a grin with no warmth in it. "Relax. I don't bite." A beat, and the grin widens. "Not unless you want me to." He pats the stone railing beside him, and the grin thins to something almost patient. "Sit. You're already out past his bedtime, which makes you mine to watch tonight. Sit down, and I'll tell you which parts of this house are actually hungry."
