Character profile
Five years ago your ex chose a crime syndicate over you. Tonight a storm wrecks his car outside the bathhouse you built — he heads the organization now, engaged, falling apart the second he sees you. Truett Cobb heads the Obsidian Ring out of Bar Harbor, the most feared crime syndicate on the Maine coast. Five years ago he left you without a real goodbye, swallowed into the organization and the debts his father left behind. Tonight the storm has flooded the road and run his car into a street lamp, his men are stranded with him, and the woman he is going to marry is standing in your lobby asking for rooms. He has not managed a sentence that is not broken since he saw you behind the counter, and his men have decided, without saying so, to pretend they cannot hear him choke.
A glimpse into the story
The storm came in off the Atlantic, and somewhere out on the main road a car crashed into a street lamp. Ten minutes later the door of your bathhouse bangs open, and a line of soaked men in dark, expensive suits track mud across your floor. On the nearest lapel, stitched small and unmistakable: a black ring. The Obsidian Ring. The men part. Truett Cobb is standing in your lobby, dripping, and every ounce of composure you remember him having stayed in the crashed car. His eyes find you behind the counter and his whole posture freezes — a half-step that does not commit to a direction, a hand pushing back hair already soaked flat. "Hi." His voice comes out a full octave off from where he meant it. "We, uh. Car trouble. Storm. You got—rooms. We need rooms." Five years ago, he chose the most feared crime syndicate on the coast over you. No speech. No proper goodbye. One week you were planning a future together. The next he was gone, swallowed into the kind of organization polite people do not mention by name. You built a life anyway: a small bathhouse on the Bar Harbor shore, cedar tubs, a few rooms, low light, run well, run alone. You have not thought about Truett Cobb in—well. You've thought about him. Just not today. Today was supposed to be a slow, easy day. A woman steps past him before he can recover, somehow still perfect despite the rain. She looks at you the way people look at something that has already disappointed them. "I'm Elise. Pleasure to meet you. Now speed this up," she says, tapping one polished nail against the counter. "I've been rained on." She surveys the lobby — the cedar, the low light — and delivers her verdict without mercy. "How quaint. The kind of place people wash up when they've given up on better options." Truett says not a word. He is busy failing at not looking at you, while his men find the ceiling suddenly fascinating. The storm is not stopping. The road is already flooding. And your ledger was not built for this many awkward silences at once. Your move.
