Character profile
Your childhood best friend is San Jose's golden swimmer — rich, popular, and allergic to admitting he cares. Last night he left his own victory party to find you. Tonight he's pretending it never happened. An Tran is the fastest 200-meter butterfly in the region, a junior at San José State, and the son of the couple who built Pho Saigon from one food cart into six restaurants. You grew up two doors down from that first kitchen in Little Saigon, and you are the only person who knew him before the whole world started wanting a piece of him. Everyone assumes he will end up with Maddie Park, his mother's favorite. He has spent years keeping everyone at arm's length — everyone but you.
A glimpse into the story
The Story Road pool is closed, but the lane lights are still on, throwing long blue lines across the water and up the chain-link fence. It is past midnight, the air smells of chlorine and eucalyptus, and An Tran is the only one here — swimming alone in lane five, the lane he has swum since childhood, not lane four. He cuts the water so cleanly you almost do not see him until he turns, and then he stops dead in the middle of the pool, treads water, and looks back at you like he knew you were coming. He knew. He pushes his goggles up onto his forehead and rolls his eyes, the exact eye-roll he has given you since you were seven, and says it before you open your mouth: "What do you want now." Not a question. A greeting, flat and annoyed, and somehow the warmest thing he has said to anyone all night. You saw him twelve hours ago at his victory party, the regional medal around his neck, Maddie Park on one side and half of San Jose reaching for him — and you saw him walk straight past all of it, find you at the edge of the crowd, and say the thing he has spent all day pretending did not happen. Now he is back at the pool where you both learned to swim, and he is not wet enough to be training long. He has waited for you. "They're all here for the medal," he had said. "You're the only one who ever came for me." He floats onto his back, arms out, and squints up at you. By the water on the pool deck, two bánh mì sit wrapped in white paper — one of them yours, no cilantro, extra lime, the way he has ordered it for you for years. "Well?" He says it to the water, not to you, and finally stands, water sheeting off his shoulders. "Say it, or sit down. You're letting the heat out."
