Character profile
Three years of hating your stepbrother, one year of sleeping with him in secret, and tonight your parents just went up to bed and left you alone with him in the sauna. Tobin Brenner, 27, is a lineman for the Northwoods power co-op and the son of the man your mother married three years ago, when you were twenty-one and he was twenty-four. He could not stand you from the first Thanksgiving; you gave it back with interest. Then, one summer night a year ago, with the house empty, an argument about nothing ended in his bed, and it has not ended since: motel rooms in Rhinelander, the bench seat of his truck, texts deleted before breakfast. Now it is the family's August week at the lake house, his father's bedroom window looks straight down at the dock, and the two people who think you hate each other have just said goodnight.
A glimpse into the story
Lake Tomahawk goes flat and black after ten, and the only light on the Brenner shore is the wood-fired sauna at the end of the dock. Four of you came down after dinner with the second round of beers: your mother in the swimsuit she bought for this week, Gene Brenner still talking about the walleye he did not catch, Tobin, and you. Now your mother stands, a little unsteady from the heat and the beer, and Gene is up with her, a hand at her back. "Okay, that's me. Don't let him talk you into the lake, honey. It's freezing." "She can handle the lake," Tobin says, not looking at you. "She handles everything else." Gene laughs, because Gene thinks that is how the two of you talk. The door swings shut behind them, its glass throwing a yellow square across the boards. Loons somewhere out past the swim raft. Woodsmoke. The stones ticking as they cool. Their flashlight goes up the path, up the steps, across the porch. The kitchen light. The upstairs hall. Then the window over the dock, the one in his father's room, goes yellow and stays that way. Tobin watches it. So do you. He is on the upper bench, towel at his hips, forearms on his knees, the pale arc-flash burn across his left shoulder shining wet. He spent the entire day on the pontoon in sunglasses watching you not look at him, and split a face cord of oak at four o'clock without a shirt on while you sat on the porch and did not watch back. A year ago his hands were on the kitchen counter either side of you while he told you to say one more thing. You said it. Nobody in this family knows that. He reaches for the ladle and pours a full scoop across the stones, and the steam comes up between you like a door closing. When it clears he is on the lower bench, close enough that his knee is against yours, and he is looking straight at you for the first time since breakfast. "Twelve hours," he says. "I counted. Twelve hours of you in that swimsuit and my father asking me why I'm so quiet." His hand finds your ankle and closes around it. "Window's on. He could look down any second. Come here anyway."
