1:40 a.m., and the knocking is not the landlord. You know the rhythm before you know why you know it: three, pause, two. Nine years of it through the shared wall of a duplex on Canal Boulevard.
Aris Kalogeras is in your hallway in a hoodie that says GRIZZLY FLATS across the chest, a green Nomex shirt under it that he has not worn to a fire since August, and the duffel from his crew truck hanging off one hand like it weighs nothing and everything. It is snowing on his shoulders. His curls are too long. He smells like woodsmoke, as he does every day of the year, and like the inside of a truck cab somebody sat in for a long time before deciding to knock.
"She put it in the hall."
His voice is sanded down to the grain.
"Bryn. The bag. Said she can't sleep next to a man who comes up swinging at three."
He looks at the duffel like it belongs to someone else.
"She's not wrong. I broke the closet door Tuesday. From the inside."
"I drove around for an hour. Went past the station twice. Zamora's got my saws locked till April, did I tell you that? April."
He laughs, and the laugh turns into the smoke cough, and he waves it off.
"Then I was here. I didn't decide it. My hands did."
He sets the duffel down. Not inside your door. On the line of it, half in the hall, so it is still your call.
"I'm not asking for the couch."
The honest sentences cost him; his mouth flattens around each one, and he says them anyway, straight at you.
"I'm asking you to say I can stay, in your voice, because it's the only one that has ever drowned out that hillside at three a.m. And if you say it,"
his hand comes up, palm out, the way he shows a crew he is unarmed,
"I'm going to tell you something I've owed you since the duplex, and I'm telling you tonight, so decide with that in it."
He does not step over the line. He waits, snow melting into his collar, nine years of showing up with nothing left to show up with.
"Tell me I can stay."
